Naturopathic medicine is the medicine of the future. Naturopathic medicine is oriented towards prevention of disease by promoting healthy lifestyles. Naturopathic medicine supports a society that cares for human needs as opposed to a society that supports disease. Disease is the last step in the lack of true healthcare. Scheduling your first naturopathic consultation is the most important decision on your path towards optimal health and increased longevity.

Mind-Body Medicine

We believe that mental health influences the physical body and that the health of your gut is of prime importance not only for your physical health but also for your mental well-being. Your naturopathic doctor will help you to progress on your spiritual path while treating the underlying cause(s) of your concerns. We believe it is important to customize treatment programs for each individual. We offer either residential or outpatient programs depending on your personal needs.

Assessment: Health History and Laboratory Work

During your consultation your naturopathic physician will address your physical, emotional, and spiritual history in order to identify and treat the root cause of your health concerns. Your naturopathic doctor may ask if you have experienced any traumatic event in the past or if you are currently going through an emotional crisis. Other questions may arise regarding your fears and your sense of purpose. Your naturopathic doctor will also investigate your nutritional and lifestyle habits. For example: Do you live a sedentary life, do you eat processed foods or organic foods, do you eat white sugar, drink coffee, do you smoke, do you use large amounts of alcohol, or any other drugs? In addition to a thorough history, your medical assessment will include all of the appropriate conventional lab testing as well as alternative tests that will give us a more detailed description of your biochemical health. These tests may give us information about your nutritional and hormonal status.

Treatment: Nutrition, Exercise, Counseling, Meditation, Education

Hawaii Naturopathic Retreat is non-drug oriented, instead we specialize in lifestyle changes. Counseling, nutrition, meditation and exercise are the four pillars of our strategy to support your process. Some of the therapies used are Reichian Breathwork, The Work of Byron Katie and Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). We believe that the most important biochemical interventions are detoxification and nutrition. Your detoxification program may include colon hydrotherapy, coffee enemas, infrared sauna or a heavy metal and candida or parasite cleanse. We believe that health maintenance is the result of your daily awareness; therefore education is an important component of our treatment programs. To enable you to take responsibility for your health we offer cooking classes including raw food preparation and the Gerson diet  for cancer. View all the procedures we offer and combine in our residential and outpatient programs on our procedure page.

Motivation, Knowledge, Empowerment

As treatment progresses our patients feel better which gives them the motivation to continue their lifestyle changes on their own. Equipped with the necessary tools, having found purpose, mindfulness and compassion, patients walk the path of happiness and health.

The Six Principles of Naturopathic Medicine

The practice of naturopathic medicine is founded on six principles, formulated from the observation of health and disease, and examined in light of scientific analysis. These principles distinguish naturopathic medicine from other medical approaches.

1. The Healing Power of Nature

The body has the inherent ability to establish, maintain and restore health. The physician’s role is to facilitate and augment this process, to act to identify and remove obstacles to health and recovery.

2. Identify and treat the cause

Underlying causes of disease must be treated before a person can recover. Symptoms are expressions of the body’s attempt to heal, and should not be suppressed by treatment. The physician must evaluate underlying causes on all levels, treating causes rather than symptoms.

3. Treat the whole person

Health and disease are conditions of the entire organism, involving a complex interaction of physical, spiritual, mental, emotional, genetic, environmental, and social factors. The physician must treat the whole person by taking all of these factors into account.

4. First do no harm

Illness is a purposeful process of the organism. Symptoms are an expression of the life force attempting to heal itself. The physician’s treatment must support the healing power of nature and therapy must be congruent with the internal order of the organism.

5. Physician as teacher

Acooperative doctor-patient relationship is, in itself, therapeutic. The physician’s major role is to educate and encourage the patient to take responsibility for health, and to be a catalyst for healthful change. It is the patient, not the doctor, who ultimately creates or accomplishes healing.

6. Prevention

The ultimate goal of naturopathic medicine is prevention, accomplished through education and promotion of life-habits that create good health. The emphasis is on building health rather than on fighting disease.
