St. Benedict’s Painted Church in South Kona

The Painted Church was built in 1899 by the Belgian Catholic missionary Father John Velghe. The church contains beautiful painted walls depicting the lives of the saints from the bible. The painted frescoes were used as a teaching tool by the priest as few Hawaiians could read at that time. You will find six frescoes inside the church each teaching a unique spiritual lesson. Although Father Velghe was not a trained artist, you will appreciate the colorful interior of this church. Several other priests learned from Velghe and went on to establish other ‘painted churches’ on the island.

Although St. Benedict’s is an important historical site, it is also still an active parish with regular services and outreach programs in the community. An entry fee is not required, but the church greatly appreciates donations.
