Hallucinogens & LSD Addiction and Rehabilitation

LSD

LSD is one of the most potent mind-altering chemicals known. It was discovered by Dr. Albert Hofmann in 1938. LSD is the generic name for the hallucinogen lysergic acid diethylamide-25.

It is a white, odorless powder usually taken orally, its effects are highly variable and begin within one hour and generally last 8-12 hours, gradually tapering off. It has been used experimentally in the treatment of alcoholics and psychiatric patients (where it showed some success).

Mind Altering Hallucinogen

LSD significantly –

  • alters perception,
  • changes mood,
  • alters psychological processes, and
  • can impair motor coordination and skills.

During the 1950s and early 1960s, LSD experimentation was legally conducted by psychiatrists and others in the health and mental health professions. Sometimes dramatic, unpleasant psychological reactions occur, including panic, great confusion, and anxiety. Strongly affected by SET and SETTING.

Classification: hallucinogens.

Slang names: acid, sugar, L.

The LSD Experience

The nature of LSD is not the same as many of the drugs of abuse. The experience is not necessarily always pleasant, though even if it is, users usually do not feel compelled to repeat the experience immediately.

When LSD use is part of generalized escapist behavior, occurring in combination with other drugs, this “poly drug abusing” lifestyle is what can cause harm. When LSD is used as an attempt to avoid life’s realities it is more often associated with the “bad trip” or the disruptive psychic experiences that feel harmful to the user.

PCP / Phencyclidine

PCP (phencyclidine) is classified as a hallucinogen and has many of the same effects as LSD, but can be much more dangerous.

In the 1950’s, PCP was investigated as an anesthetic, but due to its severe side effects, its development for human use was discontinued. PCP is known for inducing violent behavior as well as negative physical reactions such as seizures, coma, and death. There is no way to predict who will have a bad reaction to the drug. This may be due to the fact that PCP has so many faces–it acts as a hallucinogen, stimulant, depressant, and anesthetic—all at the same time.

It is illegally manufactured in labs and sold as tablets, capsules, or colored powder. It can be snorted, smoked, or eaten.

Street Names: Angel dust, ozone, wack, rocket fuel, and many others.

Effects:

Many PCP users are brought to emergency rooms because of overdose or because of the drug’s unpleasant psychological effects. In a hospital or detention setting, people high on PCP often become violent or suicidal.

PCP Affects Multiple Neurotransmitter Systems

PCP affects multiple neurotransmitter systems in the brain. For example, PCP inhibits the reuptake of dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin and also inhibits the action of glutamate by blocking NMDA receptors. Some types of opioid receptors in the brain are also affected by PCP. These complex effects on multiple chemical systems in the brain most likely underlie the behavioral effects of PCP.

What Others Experienced

Perhaps most valuable was the attentive natural medical support; I feel all of the above could be wasted without it. Dr. Baylac studied my case thoroughly, ordered tests that revealed underlying issues that MD’s have overlooked for years, and tweaked my customized supplement routine and IV therapy support as needed. Though drug withdrawals and food cravings were nursed to minimal discomfort (massages, teas, baths & lots of love helped), my first few weeks of detox were rough with mood instability, psychadellic flashbacks, nightmares, and occasional vomiting. I was probably a tough customer to restore to sanity, but because of her intuitive nurturing and sincere passion for helping, I was able to open up and trust Dr. Baylac and her phenomenal team to guide me to serenity.

I stayed at the Retreat for 6 weeks and this time truly changed my life. I had surgery and became addicted to opiates. One thing led to another, and before I knew it seven years of my life went by on drugs. Methadone was my drug of choice and I had tried five ‘detoxes’ and two rehabs to kick this drug. Nothing seemed to work. I suffered hard at these traditional rehabs. But I was surrounded by negative people and bad food. At the Hawaii retreat it was almost the opposite. Yeah, I went through a rough detox but the food, saunas, enemas, hydrogen peroxide baths, massages and tons of other things made it bearable. I fully detoxed from methadone and it was not as painful as it had been in the past. I’m really grateful that I had the opportunity to come here.
